Daron gets up on his soapbox….
The most effective form of evangelism is not found in our pulpits and public halls. It is not a dead men tell tales program or an amazing facts seminar….it is found in every Christian home and marriage in our community!
Faith in the home is the most potent form of evangelism on the planet.
Sometimes we go out of our way to give our kids a christian education and take them to church. We then blame these same institutions when our kids don't turn out to be the committed christians we wanted them to be. (There are no guarantees or shortcuts when it comes to passing on faith to the next generation.) Whilst a Christian education and going to church are advantageous, the advantage will only ever be reaped when these institutions are true to what and who they say they are. This is when they practice what they preach in the areas of caring, praying, learning, celebrating and serving faithfully.
The true value of investment in these institutions (and for some families it is a real sacrifice) is only ever truly realised when the church and school are seen by parents as a support and secondary to family religiousness. When everything is taken into consideration, children are more likely to adopt the faith of of their family of origin. This is the good and bad news!
According to Roberto et al "Family religiousness was the most important factor in faith maturity, even more important than lifelong exposure to Christian education… Stronger faith families produce service-orientated children who are more likely to carry the practices of discipleship into their adult years." (Generations Together, Roberto, Amidei and Merhaut, 2014)
The best thing that churches and schools can do for their congregations and students then is to invest in families, supporting and equipping them to be the sermon in their homes, marriages and relationships!
